World Oceans Day is an annual observation celebrated each year on June 8th. The day symbolically honors the world’s oceans, celebrates the products the ocean provides such as seafood as well as marine life itself for aquariums, pets, and also a time to appreciate its own intrinsic value.
The ocean also provides sea-lanes for international trade. Global pollution and over-consumption of fish have resulted in drastically dwindling population of the majority of species and will effect everybody in ways we can’t even comprehend.
Events performed for WOD and awareness includes beach cleanups, educational programs, art contests, film festivals, and sustainable seafood events. Everybody can do their part if even in the smallest way like buying a sustainable item off the menu when at dinner or the grocery store tonight.
We have a lot of work to do but we are making progress, like in this shot from Key Largo a few weeks back. Can you believe that such a beautiful reef is less than an hour drive from a population of over six million?
